You want to eat well, move well, and feel as though everything just clicked into place. But then digestion starts to slow down, bloating becomes your new BFF, and you wonder what’s going on. The answer might just lie in what you’re drinking.
A Habit You Might Not Realize You Have
Think back to your last meal. Was there a glass of cold water sitting next to your plate, waiting to be consumed along with your meal? Did the glass of cold water contain ice? Chances are, for many people, drinking a glass of cold water with their meal is a habit they don’t even think about. It’s just what they do. It’s just what they think they’re supposed to do.
But is it helping you? According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, drinking a glass of cold water with your meal slows down digestion and quenches your digestive fire. Once you grasp the concept of the digestive fire, you’ll see the connection.
All About What is Agni, Your Digestive Fire
Your Agni, or your digestive fire, is responsible for digesting your food, absorbing the nutrients, and expelling the toxins. Your digestive fire turns your meal into life force and vitality.
When your digestive fire is strong, you feel alive, your digestion is going well, and your mind is sharp and clear. When your digestion slows down, your food isn’t being digested, bloating and gas occur, you feel sluggish, and your mind becomes cloudy. This is called Mandagni.
According to Ayurveda, digestion is a flame inside of us, symbolizing digestion and life force. Now, think of pouring a big glass of cold water onto a flame. While it might not completely extinguish the flame, it also won’t keep the flame burning, right? Drinking a big glass of cold water with your meal might just have the same effect on your digestive fire.
Why Cold Water Might Mess with Digestion
Digestion is an intensive process. When you eat, your stomach receives an influx of blood, and your digestive enzymes go into hyperdrive. Your body thrives in an optimum condition. When you drink cold water with your meals, your body has to warm it up. Ayurveda recommends that you avoid drinking cold water with your meals, as it may put a monkey wrench in your digestion. Your enzymes may slow down and may not function at optimum speed. As a result, your food may not digest completely, staying in your system in an undigested state, fermenting, and causing you to feel bloated. While it may sound outrageous, there is a grain of truth in this. Enzymes need a particular temperature to function at optimum speed.
A Modern Phenomenon
Drinking ice-cold water with your meals may have become a relatively recent phenomenon. In the old days, people used to drink water at room temperature. It is only in recent times that people have started drinking ice-cold water with their meals. While Ayurveda is an ancient system, it recommends drinking water at room temperature, not ice-cold. Even Traditional Chinese Medicine recommends drinking warm or room-temperature water with your meals. While these ancient medicine practices may differ, they agree that drinking ice-cold water with your meals is not advisable.
Different Bodies, Different Responses
Ayurveda recommends that people have different constitutions. Each constitution is comprised of three types of energies. Of these, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, Vata is the lightest. Vata cannot handle cold water. If Vata is exposed to cold water, it causes bloating.
As a Kapha, your metabolic rate is a little slower, and digestion is a tad slower. Cold drinks only add fuel to the fire, leading to more sluggishness and maybe a little more weight. What to do: Warm water with a pinch of spice.
Pitta types are characterized by their inherently sharp, intense, and fiery energy. They possess the most powerful digestive fire and demonstrate the greatest resilience among the three types when exposed to cold water. However, even individuals with a Pitta constitution can gain advantages by steering clear of ice-cold water during meals, as prolonged exposure to excessive cold may eventually disturb the equilibrium of their otherwise strong digestive system.
Small Changes That Make a Big Difference
Ayurveda is quite refreshing. You do not have to buy any special equipment or use special vessels. All you have to do is make one small change that will make a big difference.
Drink a cup of warm water as soon as you wake up, before your coffee or breakfast. Warm water after the fast of the night may kick your digestion into action. Drink warm water with your meals instead of ice-cold water. If this is uncomfortable at first, you may start with lukewarm water. You should start to notice a difference within a week or two. Your digestion should normalize. Drinking warm water or tea regularly throughout the day may help your digestion. Drink small amounts frequently rather than gulping it down.
Ayurveda uses a lot of spices while cooking. One of the best home remedies that can be used to help with digestion is ginger water. Ginger is a powerful stimulant that is good for digestion and the agni. To make ginger water, you will need to boil water, add freshly sliced ginger, let it infuse, and then drink it.
Another simple solution is to try cumin water. It’s said that cumin seeds contain compounds that can activate certain enzymes. So again, boil water, add cumin seeds, boil them together, then drink it.
The Bigger Picture
In Ayurveda, health isn’t just about the external world. It’s about how we live overall: the temperature of the water we drink, how we eat, how we sleep, how much stress we carry, and how we think when we’re eating. Ayurveda looks to the underlying conditions, not just the surface-level issues, for long-term benefits.
